OCLC No Longer Offers Pinyin Conversion Services

(21 May 2004)

OCLC has provided pinyin conversion services for over 50 libraries since October 2000. This service, developed in conjunction with the Library of Congress has converted over 500,000 records for libraries throughout the United States. In addition, all WorldCat records have been converted since late 2000.

In assessing libraries' future needs, OCLC has looked at several factors in providing the pinyin service. We have determined that this service will no longer be offered after June 30, 2004. The declining activity, decreasing number of interested libraries, and extensive software maintenance were all taken into account in making this difficult decision.
