Sending and Receiving E-Mail in Chinese With Outlook

Outlook as Sending E-mail Client:

Outlook 2002 can write and send e-mail messages in Chinese using Microsoft’s Chinese Input Method Editors for simplified and traditional Chinese. In the body of the e-mail message, simply click on the language bar or language button on the task bar (this will be present after installing Microsoft’s Chinese language support and Input Method Editors (IME), and by default is indicated by the button EN for English). Then select the appropriate language: CN (PRC) for simplified or CN (Taiwan) for traditional.

The available formats are, however, different from Outlook Express’s. In Outlook, you have three format options: HTML; Rich text; Plain text. There are no options for sending as “Unicode” or “as is” as in the case of Outlook Express.

Outlook 2002, regardless of whether you choose HTML, rich text or plain text format, works with 8 out of 10 e-mail programs. Users of Hotmail with English as preferred language and Yahoo Mail need to manually select Japanese encoding. Strangely, messages sent by Outlook cannot be deciphered by Outlook Web Access. The other e-mail client that cannot read Outlook messages in Chinese is Pegasus Mail.

Outlook as Receiving E-mail Client:

Outlook 2002 is the best receiving e-mail client for Chinese messages, reading correctly 12 out of 13 sending formats tested. Messages sent by Outlook Web Access, Hotmail with English as preferred language, Yahoo Mail and OperaMail do require manual selection of Japanese as encoding format. Note that Outlook’s preview pane does not have an encoding submenu; you have to open the message in its own window to access the View/Encoding submenu.
